In order to connect to the MiServer jump server to access vCenter to administer your virtual machines, you must have a miserver-uniqname account.
Access to vCenter is not required in order to access your VMs, but here are some common reasons to request access:
- Managing VM snapshots
- VM power operations
- Viewing performance or event data
- VM console access
To request access, please follow these steps:
- If you do not have a jump account, request one by contacting [email protected]. In your request, provide an MCommunity group of which you are a member and which owns at least one MiServer VM.
- An account will be created for you, and credentials will be securely shared and only available for 7 days. Securely store the credentials in a password manager to retain access.
- Next, register the account as a U-M linked account. Open a web browser to the linked accounts page (requires UM VPN login) and click the Link New Account button. Add the account information and purpose, click Link Account, and accept the Okta push.
- Next, click Manage Duo (requires re-authenticating with Okta). On the Duo account impersonation page, select the jump account from the drop-down list and click Continue as Uniqname, then accept the Duo push.
- The account now has access to the MiServer jump server, click here for instructions on connecting to vCenter. Please note, this account does not give you access to vcenter.umich.edu.
- The jump account password can be changed at any time by visiting the jump account password reset utility. When doing so, the name must be entered in this format: umroot\miserver-[uniqname]. Save the credentials to a password management tool to avoid losing access.
Please Note:
- Jump accounts are only created for MiServer customers.
- This account only grants access to the MiServer jump server, which allows access to vCenter. Use the standard uniqname credentials to access vCenter.
- The account will be disabled by UM domain policy after 90 days of inactivity, and deleted after 120 days
- In order to keep your account current, please login in to the MiServer jump server at least once every 89 days. Once the account is disabled or deleted you must contact [email protected] to enable or recreate the account. Failure to do so may delay your access to your MiServer resources.
