Ensure you are familiar with the Pantheon WebOps Workflow (opens in new tab), which describes how code moves between Dev, Test, and Live environments.
- When you are modifying plugins/modules or themes, Pantheon stores these under the
/code
folder. - When you are managing uploads, attachments, and other data files, Pantheon stores those in the
/files
folder.
Build a new website
On your site's page in the Pantheon dashboard, use the Dev environment to add functionality and content to your website. Refer to Pantheon WebOps Workflow for more information.
Migrate an existing website
Use Pantheon's manual migration procedure (opens in new tab) to move your existing website to Pantheon, starting with the Import Your Code section in their documentation.
Pantheon's guided migration procedure can automate much of the website migration, but Pantheon only supports using guided migration if the combined size of the website's code, files, and database is 500MB or smaller. For this reason, ITS recommends using the manual migration procedure referenced above, even though the university has successfully used the guided migration procedure to move several websites in the 1 GB - 5 GB size range to Pantheon.
As an alternative to migrating your website to Pantheon yourself, you can have a web agency migrate the website for you. U-M Procurement has a list of web agencies that do not require Purchase Orders and will directly bill your university shortcode. Log in to the Quote to Order system and go to the "Web / Graphics" category. Alternatively, you can use the university's regular procurement processes to use a vendor not in the Quote to Order system.
