Uniqname Administrators with the "All-Password Reset" capability are able to reset UMICH (Level-1) passwords for members of the UMICH community who have forgotten them. Any member of the university community can phone the ITS Service Center for a password reset at any time, so only the staff of a limited number of U-M IT departments need and have this capabiity. Outside of the ITS Service Center, All-Password Reset access is available only to IT staff at Health Information Technology & Services, CAEN, Dearborn, and Flint.
Importance of Protecting Passwords
As a Uniqname Administrator you must take great care to protect your own password as well as the passwords of others. Keeping your password secret is very important because it is a valuable resource that represents you and provides access to private and sensitive university information.
Responsibility of Resetting Passwords
As a Uniqname Administrator with the All-Password Reset capability, you have an important responsibility and need to be very careful. You are responsible for protecting the privacy of individuals by enforcing Responsible Use of Information Resources (SPG 601.07).
Almost everyone requesting a password reset will be the person he or she claims to be. However, it is your responsibility to verify the person's identity before resetting their password.
All-Password Reset Agreement and Authorization
If you are an IT staff member at Health Information Technology & Services, CAEN, UM-Dearborn, or UM-Flint who needs All-Password Reset access to perform your job duties, you can request it from the ITS Service Center. You will need approval from your supervisor and unit director. You must agree to abide by the Proper Use Policy.
