Overview

This document provides steps for logging in to U-M Cocoon Data, whether for the first time or with/without SSO.

Table of Contents

Log In for the First Time

Important: In order to access U-M Cocoon Data you must first be invited by your Unit IT tenant administrator. You will be added to the U-M SafeShare Home tenant in addition to any other tenants to which you may be invited.

Create your account

Once you have been invited to U-M Cocoon Data, you will receive an email from [email protected] with the subject: “Cocoon Data account created.”

Follow the instructions in the email to create your account:

  1. Go to https://access.umich.cocoondata.com.

Note: You do not need to click “First time user or forgot your password?” to sign in for the first time. However, if you do not set up your account immediately after receiving the email, and your temporary password expires, you will need to click “First time user or forgot your password?” to reset it.

  1. Enter the email address at which you received the email (i.e., your UMICH email address) and the temporary password provided in the appropriate fields.

Note: You will need to reset this temporary password the first time you sign in. Refer to Change your temporary password below.

  1. Click SIGN IN.

  1. Once logged in, you will be prompted to add additional personal information, such as your name and phone number. If you would like to add this information to your account, enter the relevant information in the fields and click Save. Otherwise, check the “I don’t want to see this again” box and click Save.

You should now be on your U-M Cocoon Data homepage where you can switch between tenants you are a part of and access documentation. However, you will need to change your temporary password first.

Change your temporary password

Cocoon Data will not prompt you to change your temporary password upon account creation. You will need to navigate to your account settings and reset it.

  1. From the homepage, click your UMICH email address in the upper right corner.

  1. Select My Account.
  2. Under Security and then Setting, find Password and click Change password.
  3. Enter your old and new password in the text fields and click Change.

Set up two-factor authentication

Important: All users, U-M and external, will be placed into the U-M SafeShare Home tenant upon account creation. Since U-M SafeShare Home requires two-factor authentication, you will be required to use two-factor authentication with all tenants. (This is because your account login is associated with all of the tenants of which you’re apart.) U-M users will also have the option to turn on Single Sign On to use Weblogin instead. Refer to Log in With and Without Single Sign On (SSO) below for more information.

Upon account creation, you will receive an email notification from [email protected] with the subject: “Two-factor authentication has been enabled for your account.”

To set up two-factor authentication:

  1. Click the unique link provided in the email notification which will take you to the Cocoon Data two-factor authentication setup page.

Important: This unique link is only valid for 3 days and can only be used once. If you pass the time limit or try to use it more than once, you will need to reach out to your Unit IT tenant administrator to ask them to resend the notification.

  1. Next, select the type of device you will be using to configure two-factor authentication from the options provided and click Select.
  2. If you have not done so already, install the desired authenticator app to the device you selected. (ITS recommends Duo Mobile.)

Note: If you do not want to use a smartphone to download a mobile authenticator app, you can use Authy via your desktop. To download the Authy application:

  1. Go to https://authy.com/download.
  2. Under Desktop, select your OS from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click Download.

Follow the Authy installation and account setup instructions in order to proceed with the next steps of Cocoon Data's two-factor authentication setup.

  1. Configure your authenticator app by pairing the app with your U-M Cocoon Data account by scanning the QR code displayed on the webpage.

  1. Verify the pairing was successful by entering the code produced by the authenticator app in the Authenticator Code field and clicking Pair.

Two-factor authentication should now be configured for use with your U-M Cocoon Data account. The next time you sign in, you will be asked to enter the code generated by your authenticator app in the Authentication code field and click Authenticate.

Log In With and Without Single Sign On (SSO)

With SSO

Note: SSO must be enabled by you for your account in order to use “Single Sign-On” to log in.

  3. From the homepage, click your UMICH email address in the top-right corner and select My Account.
  4. Under Single Sign-On approval, find the relevant tenant (or Organization name in Cocoon Data) and check the box under Approve

The next time you log in to your account, you should now be able to use “Single Sign-On.”

When SSO is enabled:

  1. Go to https://access.umich.cocoondata.com.

To reset a forgotten password, click “First time user or forgot your password?” on the U-M Cocoon Data login page. You will receive an email containing a link to reset your password that is valid for 20 minutes. After resetting your password, you will then receive a confirmation email stating your password has been successfully reset.

To log in without SSO:

  1. Go to https://access.umich.cocoondata.com.
  2. Enter your UMICH email address and Cocoon Data password, and click SIGN IN.
  3. Enter the code generated by your authenticator app in the Authentication code field and click Authenticate (if two-factor authentication is enabled for your account).

You will be redirected to your U-M Cocoon Data homepage.
