RemoteApp Setup (Windows)

Overview

RemoteApp is a service to allow you to access remotely hosted applications from your Windows PC. RemoteApp is available to faculty and staff in units that subscribe to MiWorkspace.

Windows Instructions

Find the 'Configure RemoteApp' script in the MiWorkspace Helper Icon in the system tray. You will only need to run the setup tool once. The applications available to your units will show up in your Start Menu after RemoteApp is configured.

  1. From your desktop, click Show Hidden Icons Show Hidden Icons Button.
  2. Click the MiWorkspace Helper App icon from the notification bar.

    Click Configure RemoteApp. The RemoteApp applications will appear in your Start Menu.

  4. From the Start Menu, open the application you wish to run.

    • Windows 7: Start > All Programs > RemoteApp and Desktop Connections > RemoteApp
    • Windows 10: Start > RemoteApp (RADC)

  5. When you launch the first application using RemoteApp, a dialog box will prompt you to set up your storage. Click Setup to configure Kumo. Kumo is a tool that allows you to access cloud storage files (U-M Box and U-M Google Drive) in a RemoteApp session.

  6. Log in Kumo with your uniqname and UMICH password.

  7. Authorize each cloud service by clicking the drop-down to open the cloud service details. Click Authorize.

  • Note: To Save a document, from any Microsoft Suite application, click Save or Save As and double-click This PC to see all drives - including U-M Box and U-M Google Drive.

Please Note:

  • It may take up to a minute for your RemoteApp application to fully load.
  • Your Departmental and Home Drives will be mapped and available within RemoteApp.
  • Kumo:
    • It may take up to 30 seconds for files uploaded or downloaded from another source to be reflected in the RemoteApp session you are using.

    • Individual files sizes are limited to 500MB.

Accessing Files in RemoteApp

The first time you access a RemoteApp Application you will be prompted to configure a service called Kumo. The Kumo service is provided by U-M Information and Technology Services (ITS) to support U-M Box and U-M Google Drive. Kumo treats cloud storage as local drives, so you don't need to connect to these services via the web to access your data. Once Kumo is configured, folders will be created for your U-M Box or U-M Google Drive. You will see these files in your Open and Save As dialog boxes within RemoteApp applications.

In addition to your files stored in the cloud, your department’s network drives will also be available. If you are unsure where to open or save files, please contact the ITS Service Center.

Finally, files that are saved on your computer are not available in your RemoteApp session. Be sure to configure Kumo if you need your files while using RemoteApp.

Connect from a Non-MiWorkspace Machine

RemoteApp is available to MiWorkspace customer, in units that subscribe to MiWorkspace, on whatever device, which includes MiWorkspace and Non-MiWorkspace managed devices.

  1. From your desktop, click the Start menu and type Access RemoteApp and desktops. Click the RemoteApp Icon from your start menu.

    • If you’re using Windows 7, click the Start menu and type Setup a new connection with RemoteApp and Desktop Connections. Click the RemoteApp Icon from your start menu.Double click This PC

  2. Access RemoteApp and desktops by typing in your UMICH email address (uniquename@umich.edu) and click Next.Double click This PC

     

  3. A new screen will appear validating your feed. Click Next.

    • If an error occurs, click Try Again.

  4. Verify your credentials by typing in UMRoot\Uniquename and Kerberos password. Click Ok.Double click This PC
  5. To complete your setup connection, click Finish.
  6. To access RemoteApp, click the Start menu and expand the RemoteApp (RADC) folder. Click on any App you wish to access.

Printing Files from a RemoteApp Application

  1. Open the desired application and select the file you wish to print.

  2. If you have a printer installed to your device, you may print just as you normally would.

    • Note: These printers will be labeled as Printer Name (Redirected #).

  3. If you do not have a printer installed and you want to print to Follow Me, go to File > Print and select the Follow Me print option.

Note: Follow Me allows you to release your document from MiWorkspace multifunction printers on campus by swiping your Mcard or entering your uniqname and UMICH password on the keypad.
