Accounts are organizations, such as businesses and schools, who work with or want to work with the University. Accounts are generally external to U-M, but internal U-M groups and clubs which are involved with a project being tracked in Salesforce may also have Account records.
Important Notes
- Always search for an Account to verify a record does not exist before creating a new record.
- Required fields are marked with an asterisk (*).
- Non-required fields should be completed when information is available and in coordination with your office’s business process.
- Roll over the question marks (?) for additional information about a field. Not all fields have question marks.
Search for an Account
- Click Add Account on the Home tab.
- Search for the Account.
- If the organization’s name can be written in different ways, be sure to search for all known names (e.g., search by General Motors and GM).
- If the Account is not found, continue to Enter New Account.
If the Account is found, click Next. The Account record opens and the process is complete.
Enter New Account
- Check the Cannot Find Account box.
- Click Next.
- Select an Account Type (required) from the drop-down list. Options are Business Organization, Educational Institution, Government Organization, Non-Profit Organization, and University Organization.
- Definitions of each type are included on the Create Account window.
- Enter an Account Name (required).
- The Account Name should be the full, official name of the organization.
- Enter the Account’s Website address.
- Select the Company Size from the drop-down list.
- Enter a Description of the Account.
- Enter the Address, including Street, City, State/Province, Zip/Postal Code and Country.
- Click Next to save and open the record.
Notes:
- Additional information about the Account can be added on the Account record. This includes Fax number, Parent Account, and Industry.
- If needed, a Contact can be added to the Account record. Click New Contact on the Account record to create the Contact.
