Reactivate or Restore the Duo Mobile App

This document provides instructions for reactivating or restoring the Duo Mobile app after you get a new smartphone or tablet. There are two options covered in this document:

  • Reactivate. If you have an alternate method of Duo two-factor (such as a phone call ), you can use your smartphone or tablet to scan a QR code from your Duo Device Settings. If not, you can contact the ITS Service Center for an activation link.
  • Restore. Get the app working on a new device without requiring a separate reactivation step. This option has some conditions that must be met, as detailed with the steps below.

Reactivate the Duo Mobile app

  1. From a desktop or laptop computer, go to UMICH Account Management.
  2. Log in with your uniqname and UMICH (Level-1) password.
  3. Click Manage Duo Devices.
  4. If necessary, scroll down to see your full list of devices.

  5. Click Device Options next to the device or phone number you want to reactivate.
  6. On the Device Options screen, click Reactivate Duo Mobile and complete the onscreen prompts to scan the QR code with your device.

Restore the Duo Mobile app on an iOS device

This option first requires that you have an iCloud account configured on the device with iCloud Keychain enabled. You can restore only for devices on the same platforms (iOS to iOS).

  1. When setting up the new device, choose to restore from iCloud, iTunes backup, or a transfer from the old device.
  2. From the new device, when first opening the Duo Mobile app it should recognize the backup from iCloud. Tap Get Started to complete the setup.

Restore the Duo Mobile app on an Android device

To restore on a new Android device, you need access to the old device to complete activation. Also:

  • The Duo Mobile app needs to be enabled for backup to Google Drive on the old device before starting the restore process on the new device.
  • You can restore only for devices on the same platforms (Android to Android).
  1. After launching the app on the new device, tap Get my account back. You will be prompted to launch Duo Mobile on your old device to display a QR code.
  2. Scan the QR code on the new device to restore the Duo Mobile app.
