Placing Calls

Note: U-M does not support the Contact List feature.

  1. Enter the phone number in the Jabber hub Search or Call field. 
  2. Click the phone icon next to the Search or Call field. 

Important: When entering a non-UM number, enter a 9+1 before the ten-digit phone number.

Receiving Calls

In order to receive a call using Jabber, you must be logged in to the application. Settings affect a phone number regardless if it is set on the desk phone or softphone. Changing the settings on one also changes the settings on the other. 

When you receive an incoming call, a call window opens on your screen:

  • Click Answer to accept the call.
  • Click Decline to forward the call to voicemail.

    Placing a Call on Hold

    1. Click the three-dot menu icon.
    2. Select Hold.
    3. Click Resume to return to the call.

    Creating a Conference Call

    While you are on a call that you wish to turn into a conference call:

    1. Place the first caller on hold:
      1. Click the three-dot menu icon.
      2. Select Hold.
    2. Dial the second caller:
      1. Enter the phone number in the Jabber hub Search or Call field. 
      2. Click the phone icon next to the Search or Call field. 
    3. Finally, merge the calls to create the conference:
      1. Click the three-dot menu icon.
      2. Select Merge with... (the first caller's number).

    Transferring a Call

    Transferring allows a call from the softphone to be transferred to other phones on the U-M system.

    1. Click the three-dot menu icon.
    2. Select Transfer.
    3. Enter the phone number to which you want to transfer the call in the Search field.
    4. Click Transfer to complete the transfer.

    Forwarding Calls

    Note: We ask that you do not forward your university softphone to a personal or home phone number. This feature is reserved for critical operations.
    1. Click the Jabber window icon for Call Settings located to the right of your phone number, under the Call History.
    2. Select Forward Calls.
    3. Select Voicemail or select New Number to enter another phone number. For non-UM numbers, enter a 9+1 before the ten-digit phone number.
    4. Select the new number from the Forward Calls to: drop-down menu. The forwarding number will show on the main Jabber page.

    To Stop Forwarding

    1. Click the Jabber window icon for Call Settings located to the right of your phone number, under the Call History.
    2. Select Forward Calls and select Off from the drop-down menu.

    How to Clear Call History

    Right-click on a recent or missed call to delete the item.

    Sign Out of Jabber 

    1. In the upper-left corner of your Mac screen, select Jabber.
    2. Select Sign Out.  This will log you out of the Jabber Client.

    Additional Configuration Options

    1. To configure your headset or other options on your Jabber device, click Preferences from the Jabber hub at the top of your Mac screen under Jabber
