Overview
After creating an account in U-M Slack, you have the ability to join any additional workspaces to which you've been invited (including the Maize & Blue workspace). Depending on your workspace settings, you may be able to invite additional members and single-channel guests. This document provides instructions on inviting eligible U-M members and guests into a U-M Slack workspace.
Tip: In the Maize & Blue workspace, you can invite members and single-channel guests to your private channel(s). All member and guest invitations to the Maize & Blue workspace will be automatically approved.
Invite a Member
By default, Workspace Admins and current members can invite members. However, a Workspace Admin can restrict current members from inviting additional members to their workspace. For more information, refer to Workspace Admin Control for Inviting Members in Slack.
Note: If your workspace is managed by an MCommunity group or Canvas course, you may still invite individuals directly in Slack, but they will not be synced with the group/course and will need to be manually removed when no longer needed.
To invite a member to your workspace:
- Click the plus icon (+) in the lower-left corner of the desktop app.
- Select Invite people.
- Select the workspace to which you want to invite a new member from the drop-down and click Next.
- Enter the individual's @umich.edu email address in the Send to field.
- Select Member from the Invite as drop-down menu.
- [Optional] Select the channels you would like to add this individual to automatically upon joining.
- [Optional] Click Add a message to add a note.
- Click Send.
Note: You cannot use the direct workspace link to invite individuals to a workspace. If you want individuals to be able to invite themselves to a workspace via a link, we recommend using a self-joinable MCommunity group to manage membership.
Invite a Guest
Important: You cannot invite U-M Slack accounts with an @umich.edu email address as single-channel guests to a U-M Slack workspace. We recommend converting the channel you're trying to add them to into a multi-workspace channel between two U-M Slack workspaces.
By default, only Workspace Admins can invite single-channel guests into their workspaces (but not multi-channel guests, as they aren't available in U-M Slack).
- Click the plus icon (+) in the lower-left corner of the desktop app.
- Select Invite people.
- Select the workspace to which you want to invite a new guest from the drop-down and click Next.
Enter the guest's email address in the Send to field.
Note: Guests must be added with a non-UMICH email address (even if they have an @umich.edu email address, such as alumni or retirees).
- Select Guest from the Invite as drop-down menu.
Enter the channel name to which you'd like to add the guest in the Add to team channels field and select it from the drop-down list.
Caution: If you attempt to invite a guest to more than one channel, the invite will be declined, and you will receive a message from the U-M ITS Slack Attendant stating that guests can access only one channel.
- [Optional] Select a time limit for the guest's access from the Set an expiration date drop-down menu.
- Click Send Request.
