Installing Cisco IP Communicator Softphone

Getting Started

Notes:
  • Administration access is needed on your machine to complete each installation. If needed, contact MiWorkspace or local IT support for further assistance.
  • U-M VPN (student, faculty, and staff profile) is required when off the U-M Network.
  • If settings are grayed out, run the program as an Administrator.

Note IP Communicator is for use with PC only. ICD users must have IP Communicator open to use Finnesse. 

  1. Download the IP Communicator.
  2. Open the .exe file.
  3. Run on your PC. Follow the prompts to complete the download.
  4. Click the Cisco IP Communicator Wizard  and follow the instructions:
    • At the "Audio Tuning Wizard" click Next. The Audio is dependent on your device's audio or an external audio device such as headphones. 
    • Select your preferred audio device, click Next.
    • Adjust Listening Volume. Click Play and then click Next
    • Adjust Microphone Volume. Click Test and then click Next.
  5. Click Finish to complete the Audio Tuning Wizard. Once complete, the Cisco IP SoftPhone will appear on the desktop of your PC.
  6. Set up your device by clicking the Menu icon at the top.
  7. Select Preferences.
  8. Click the Audio tab.
    1. Select the appropriate device for the headset, speakerphone, handset, and ringer. (You will likely select the same device for all boxes.)
    2. Leave the "Optimize for low bandwidth" box unchecked.
    3. Click Network > Audio IP address > Detect Automatically > Audio Port Range > Use the default port range.
    4. Optional: Click Advanced and select Mode (i.e., Handset, Headset, or Speakerphone). Check the Enable Noise Suppression box and click the Low radio button in the Levels of Aggressiveness field.
    5. Click OK.
  9. Select the Network tab.
  10. Select the Use this Device Name radio button.
  11. Enter your ten-digit number with the AB (e.g., 7346470000AB).
  12. Select Use these TFTP servers:​
    • Ann Arbor
      • TFTP Server 1: 198.108.8.164
      • TFTP Server 2: 141.213.192.5​
    • Dearborn​
      • TFTP Server 1: 141.215.5.8
      • TFTP Server 2: 141.215.5.102
    • Flint​
      • TFTP Server 1: 141.216.2.230​
      • TFTP Server 2: 141.216.5.199
  13. Click OK and wait for IP Communicator to configure.
