This guide is for new instructors interested in utilizing the MiVideo media service in their Canvas course.

MiVideo Mediaspace
Kaltura Mediaspace is a cloud-based media repository platform used by the University of Michigan. MiVideo Mediaspace is an instance of the Kaltura Mediaspace available to all faculty, staff, and students of the University across all three campuses; Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint.
My Media
My Media is your personal media library for video, audio, and images. My Media is the collection of all the media you own as well as media shared with you by others (by making you a collaborator for the media). Media located in your My Media in Canvas is accessible from all your Canvas courses and from your My Media in MiVideo Mediaspace.
Media Gallery
Media Gallery is each Canvas course’s central library for MiVideo video, audio, and images. All Students, Teachers, and other people in the course can search and view all the media published within the Media Gallery. Teachers, TAs, and Designers who own or are co-publisher for media can publish media to the Media Gallery. Media in the Media Gallery can be organized into playlists. MiVideo LTI Integration with Canvas (Kaltura KAF)
MiVideo Mediaspace has an LTI integration with Canvas. This tool is already enabled for all courses. The MiVideo LTI provides:
- Access to your My Media library from inside Canvas (Account > My Media).
- An individual Media Gallery for each course, accessible by clicking Media Gallery in the course's left navigation menu.
- The ability to embed and link to MiVideo media from course content.
- The ability to pass back IVQ quiz scores to the Canvas gradebook.
- The ability to import a Media Gallery from one course into another.
Pricing, Storage, and Retention
- There is no charge to use the MiVideo service which includes automatic speech recognition (ASR) closed captions. Professional captioning, translations, and audio descriptions are premium fee-based services.
- There is no storage limit; it is highly recommended to upload and store course media in MiVideo to prevent maxing out the 12GB per Canvas course file storage restriction Canvas enforces
- There is no file size limit; however consider making shorter recordings, this helps you keep your audience's attention and makes it easier on you for editing and recovering from errors (for example, not having the right mic selected)

- MiVideo does not have a retention policy. Media in MiVideo will not be automatically deleted after a certain period of time.
Getting Started
Step 1: Create media
MiVideo supports many common audio and video formats, see the Kaltura learning article What files does Kaltura support? for the complete list.
There are many different software applications that create audio and video recordings. You can use whatever application you are most familiar with. UM Zoom recordings can also be copied into MiVideo (see the Add media section below).
Kaltura provides two free recording options:
- Kaltura Express Capture - a browser-based webcam and audio recorder that does not record the screen. Your audio/video file is uploaded to your My Media but a copy of the file is not saved locally onto your device. Recommended only for short recordings. - Kaltura Capture - a free screen recording software application for Windows and MacOS that provides a variety of recording and annotation tools. It will record your screen/Powerpoint presentation as well as webcam/audio and save the recording locally onto your computer to be uploaded to your My Media. Step 2: Add media to your My Media library or add media to the Media Gallery
There are two ways to add new media; from within your My Media or from within the Media Gallery. Adding new media automatically makes you the owner of the media item and grants you the ability to publish and edit the media.
- Add new media within the Media Gallery - this option adds the media item to your My Media and automatically publishes the media to the Media Gallery. Use this option if you want the media to be immediately accessible to everyone enrolled in the course.
Navigate to the course > Media Gallery > Media tab > Add Media > Add New
- Add new media within your My Media library - media added to your My Media is private and only accessible by you (and any collaborators for the media) until you publish or embed it into Canvas content. Use this option if you want to keep your media private until a later time, if you want to embed the media instead of publishing to the Media Gallery, or if you want to edit before publishing it.
Account > My Media > Add New
There are several ways to add new media to your My Media and Media Gallery, see the Add New Media articles for more info about these options:
- Media Upload - upload media that is saved locally on a device or computer hard drive
- Express Capture - use Kaltura Express Capture, a browser-based webcam and audio recorder, to create and upload a recording
- YouTube - link YouTube videos (Kaltura analytics are captured for YouTube videos, see the View analytics section below)
- Kaltura Capture - use Kaltura Capture, a free screen recording software application for Windows and MacOS that provides a variety of recording and annotation tools, to create and upload a recording to your library. Note: Kaltura Capture does not appear as a menu item in the Add New drop-down menu in a course Media Gallery because Capture cannot automatically publish to a Media Gallery. Instead create a new Capture recording from within My Media, then publish the recording to the Media Gallery.
- Video Quiz - embed an Interactive Video Quiz (IVQ) into an existing video
UM Zoom Recordings
In addition to Kaltura’s built-in options, ITS provides a web interface to copy your UM Zoom Cloud Recordings into your My Media. Like all media you own in your My Media, you can edit and order captions. See the Copy UM Zoom Cloud Recordings to My Media article.
Step 3: Edit media and create an Interactive Video Quiz (IVQ)
You must be the owner or co-editor to edit media in your My Media.
Video Editing Tools
The Video Editor provides media trim, chop, splice, and copy capabilities within Canvas and MiVideo Mediaspace. In addition, Interactive Video Quizzes (IVQs) and hotspots can be embedded into videos. See related Video Editing Tools articles for more information about this editor.
Interactive Video Quiz (IVQ)
IVQ provides embedding 4 question types into a video; multiple choice, true or false, reflection point, and open answer. Responses are recorded and scores can be passed back to Canvas when published as an assignment. See the Create and Publish IVQ article.
Adobe Creative Cloud
In addition to Kaltura’s built-in video editing tools Adobe Premiere and Adobe Premiere Rush are other options for video editing. The Adobe Creative Cloud suite is available for all eligible U-M people at no-cost. See the Adobe Creative Cloud webpage for more details. Training for Adobe products can be found on LinkedIn Learning (available at no cost to all active faculty, staff, and students at the University).
Edit Media Details
Edit the details of the media file on the Edit Media page. Edit the file name, add tags, add attachments, insert chapters or slides, and add collaborators. See the Edit Media articles for information about the editing tabs on this page.
Media Collaborators
Media owners can add collaborators (co-editors and co-publishers) to share access to their media. See the Media Collaboration and Roles article.
Step 4: Edit captions or order premium services (as needed)
Media owners and co-editors can order and edit captions for audio and video files.
Auto machine-generated English captioning
Auto captioning will be enabled in MiVideo on 4/22/2024. After auto captioning is enabled, machine-generated English captions will be automatically ordered for all video and audio you add to your My Media library. This includes uploaded media from a desktop, media uploaded from Kaltura Capture, passthrough media from YouTube, media recorded using Express Capture, and media copied using the U-M Zoom Recordings Manager.
Canvas course managers (Teachers, TAs, Designers) can order captions for most Media Gallery content without having to be the owner or a co-editor.
This service is provided using automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology. This is a free service. These captions are not always accurate. See the Edit Captions article to edit captions for accuracy and accessibility.
Premium fee-based services
These services are fee-based and can be ordered with a shortcode.
Step 5: Publish media
Media you added from within a course Media Gallery is added to your My Media as well as automatically published in the Media Gallery. Media you added from within your My Media is private and only accessible by you (or any collaborators) until you publish it or embed it into Canvas content.
There are several ways to publish and embed media in your course. See the Publish Media in Canvas article. You must be the owner or co-publisher of the media item and a Teacher, TA, or Designer in the course.
- Publish to the Media Gallery
All Students and other people enrolled in the course can search and view all the media within the Media Gallery. The Media Gallery is accessible by clicking Media Gallery in the course's left navigation menu.
- Create media Gallery playlists
Media Gallery playlists can be created to organize media into easy to browse collections so viewers don’t have to search to find related media. Multiple playlists can be created and the position media appear in the playlist can be ordered. See the Create Playlists article.
- Embed media and Media Gallery playlists into course content using the Rich Text Editor
Media and Media Gallery playlists can be embedded onto Pages, Assignments, or any tool that utilizes the Rich Text Editor. Embedded media does not have to be first published to the Media Gallery to be viewable using this method, however, embedded playlists require all media in the playlist to be published to the Media Gallery. Access to the media is restricted based on who has access to the page, assignment, etc.
- Link to media or Media Gallery playlists in a module
Create a module item that links to media or a playlist. To link to a playlist, the playlist must first be created in the Media Gallery.
- Publish an IVQ Video Quiz as an Assignment
Publishing an IVQ as an assignment passes the score back to the Canvas gradebook.
Step 6: View analytics
Kaltura Analytics describes how viewers engage with your media. Analytics are aggregated across both Canvas and MiVideo Mediaspace platforms.See related Analytics articles for more information about these metrics.
Analytic metrics can be found for:
- Media Gallery - how viewers engage with all media items in a course Media Gallery in Canvas.
- Media - how viewers engage with a specific published media item.
- Interactive Video Quiz (IVQ) - additional analytics for videos with IVQs including quiz answers and scores.
Import Course Content from a Previous Course
Media and playlists linked to or embedded in Canvas content and imported (copied) from a previous Canvas course will become associated with the new course and accessible by anyone enrolled in the new course. Only Teachers, TAs, or Designers for both courses are able to copy Canvas content.
Media published to the Media Gallery and Media Gallery playlists can not be copied using the Canvas import tool. MiVideo provides a separate import function. You do not need to be the media owner or co-publisher to import media into the Media Gallery. You must however be a Teacher, TA, or Instructional Designer for both courses. Student Media Submissions
Students also have a My Media library and can embed MiVideo media as assignment submissions for assignments that allow for submission via the Rich Text Editor. See the Upload Student Video Assignments in Canvas article.
